About Possibilities of Estimating Stress Intensity Factors for Cracks in Isotropic and Anisotropic Materials
The great number of numerical and experimental techniques, such as the linearization of stress concentration factors, are employed for detrmining the stress intensity factors (SIF) of the cracks in deformed structures. The optical method of caustics is originally applied to mechanically isotropic materials, where the process of evaluation of SIFs is reduced to the epicycloidal dark spot measuring. The reflection method of caustics is developed and applied to nontransparent mechanically anisotropic materials such as fibre reinforced composites. The size of the dark spot del5ends upon the load intensity, while its shape depends extremely upon the mechanical properties of the material and the position of the crack-tip.
