Clonal selection of the olive cultivar Oblica of the natural population

40 cultivars are grown in the area of Croatia. However, one or two cultivars are represented in the plantation while the other cultivars have only symbolic meaning. The breeding of one cultivar with low precent of autofertilisation causes a very low yield because of known problem the polination and fertilisation. As a result of this problems we aimed our research to the identification of the positives clones of the olive cultivar. The programme of cultivar "Oblica" clone selection of the natural population started in 1991-1996 when 14 clones were registrated in the area of north, middle and south Dalmatia. Investigating these characteristics we concluded that sixs clones had some characteristics that we recognized as better than the ordinary characteristics of cultivar "Oblica". Within these clones two of them the have same flower-time as cultivar "Oblica" while four ones have the flower-time four to ten days later. Concerning oil quantity in the fruit five clones have a higher level of the oil than cultivar "Oblica". All of registrated clones showed higher percentage of autofertilisation what is very significantcharacteristics in the effort to eliminate not regular fertility cultivar "Oblica". Propagation of the elementar material was done by MIST method and all clones demonstrated satisfied results. Due to this selection the clones, registrated as positive, have been planted as on collection. Research continnation will be carried out by the comparative experiment.
