Application of Flight Test Technique using GPS for Position Error Assessment of Cessna 172R
Accurate assessment of flight speed is of major importance for flight safety since all aircraft performance characteristics are function of airspeed. Measuring of aircraft airspeed is based on measuring the dynamic pressure as a difference between pitot and static pressure. Position error is part of standard tests for aircraft performance evaluation and certification under CS 23. In this work GPS method for position error estimation is conducted with Cessna 172R aircraft. Basic idea is to identify if there are any differences between actual aircraft performances after years of operations and performances given in Pilot Operating Handbook (POH). Performed method is chosen since it doesn’t require any special or expensive instrumentation besides GPS Garmin device. Test results are compared and evaluated with position error measured as a part of certification process and given in POH.
