Semantics in multi-agent systems
In a large scale, open and distributed environment, interoperability is a key issue which requires a formal definition of the semantics of data model, processes, and knowledge. In this respect, conforming to standards is a first step towards enabling interoperation of autonomous systems. Yet, the openness and autonomy of individual systems produce heterogeneity that need extending standard semantic formalism in a non- standard way. Further, matching disparate knowledge sources is crucial to make distinct agent interact adequately. The chapter presents the logical formalisms that have been defined to adapt formal semantics to distributed, heterogeneous knowledge-based systems. It discusses how Semantic Web standards can provide a good common ground for interoperability ; how ontology matching techniques can reconciliate different knowledge representations. It then focuses particularly on the use of semantic technologies in Multi-Agent Systems and Web services, two essential application fields of Agreement Technologies.
