Influence of soil type on growth stages and must composition of cv. Istrian Malvasia
Soil, along with climatic factors, makes production conditions for grape growing. That way, vegetative growth, grape and wine quality are affected. In Istrian winegrowing subregion, different parental materials formed different soil types. The aim of this research was to determine if soil type affects growth stages and must composition of cv. Istrian Malvasia. The trial was located at Bajkini (Vižinada), where two soil types, rendzina and typical terra rossa, exist within less than one kilometer distance. Two Istrian Malvasia vineyards were studied, each of one established on one of existing soil types. Growth stages were monitored throughout entire vegetative period. At usual harvest time, basic must composition was determined (soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH value). Results showed that the beginning of each growth stage was earlier in rendzina vineyard than in terra rossa vineyard. Earlier ripening also affected must composition so the soluble solids were significantly higher in rendzina vineyard. Total acidity in the same vineyard was significantly lower while pH value was higher than the one in terra rossa vineyard.
