English in Croatian Scientific Medical Discourse: A Corpus-Based Study
English as a lingua franca is part of the more general phenomenon of ‘English as an international language’. Its influence on other languages, Croatian being one of them, is evident in public, political, scientific, economic, cultural and media discourse. Recent research has pointed to most frequently neglected differences between English and Croatian such as passive voice, present and past participle, pronouns, verbs and noun compounds. On the lexical level, most common problems are false friends and use of English words. This study presents findings from a corpus-based qualitative and quantitative analysis of passive constructions, verbs, noun compounds and English words in scientific medical discourse. The corpus of four journals, Acta Stomatologica Croatica, Gynaecologia et Perinatologia, Medicina Fluminensis and Paediatria Croatica from 2008 to 2011, refers to the theoretical parts of the papers.
