Modern characterization of ancient materials from underwater archeological site
The use of Spanish Broom and its diverse application has been known in the entire Mediterranean since the ancient times. The Greeks, Romans and Carthagians used Spanish Broom as a raw material for manufacturing ropes, nets, bags, etc. In this paper we have investigated some textile materials (unique wicker basket, vessels tightened by bast fibre ropes) and wood founded near the remains of two Liburnian ships in Zaton. Investigation methods used in this paper are SEM (scanning electron microscopy), EDX (energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), and TGA (thermal gravimetric analysis).
