Managerial competencies for sustainable future – perceptions of graduate students

Managerial competencies are a popular field of study from 1982, when Boyatzis determined a set of essential competencies of successful managers through critical incident research. His model was further explored and developed by many researchers, while this paper assesses key managerial competencies for the sustainable future. In the theoretical part of the paper the concept of managerial competencies is defined, significance and challenges of the competencies framework are discussed, most prominent classifications of managerial competencies are presented, and characteristics of socially responsible leaders which enable a sustainable future are provided. In the empirical part of the paper preferred managerial competencies in general and those needed for the sustainable future, as well as desirable demographic characteristics of managers, were determined upon perceptions of 327 graduate students from the University of Zagreb from five different scientific fields (humanistic, medicine, natural, social and technical studies). Additionally, the differences in respondents’ perceptions depending on their individual characteristics were explored. For the assessment of managerial competencies “1998 Leadership competency model” developed by Eyde and associates (1999) which encompasses 27 managerial competencies was used, while the ideal demographic profile of a manager was explored through four questions –gender, age, level of education, and profession.
