The effect of precipitati n and soil tillage systems on maize yield variability on Chernozem type of soil
Maize yield in Serbia vary highly from year to year. It depends on multiple factors, mainly on soil type, tillage practices and meteorological conditions. The aim of our paper was to investigate the effect of precipitation and 3 tillage practices on maize yield variability over 12 years (1999-2010) on Chernozem type of soil in Zemun Polje. The highest yield and the lowest yield variability was recorded at 450-500 mm of precipitation during vegetation. Sum of August and sum of precipitation during vegetative period significantly correlate to maize yield in all tillage treatments except in CT. Sum of September precipitati on significantly but negatively correlate to maize yield in all three tillage treatment. The average 12 year maize yield equaled to 10.04 t/ha (average value for 3 tillage treatments), ranging from 6.50 – 14.19 t/ha (65-141% of the average value). The highest yield variability was found on minimum tillage (average +57% and average -56%) and the lowest on conventi onal tillage treatment (average +31% and average -23%).
