Recent developments in 3-D photoelasticity by means of ionizing radiation

Several attempts are known in order to overcome the disadvantages of the usual photoelastic freezing technique by means of ionizing radiation [1 - 8]. In these papers however only commercially available thermally cured polymers were used, based on epoxy resin;and polycarbonate. In [9] and [10] new radiation cured polymers based on acrylic resin systems of aliphatic and aromatic character were investigated. The new materials were produced by partial radiation polymerisation leaving reactive groups for a subsequent crosslinking reaction during fixation of a state of deformation of a loaded body. The influence of the radiation dose D on the mechanical properties (Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and creep parameters) and on the stress-optical coefficient f_sigma is investigated. It could be shown, [11] and [12], that the longtime stability of f_a is much better given with aromatic-based resin systems. Therefore all fixation-experiments reported in this paper are carried out using aromatic-based resins.
