Comparison of the student activity inside online course content within the same-generation of students in the 1st then in the 7th semester

Since its establishment in 2002, the Zagreb School of Economics and Management (ZSEM) has systematically implemented the use of e-learning in its education offer. All courses have been developed in an e-learning format, and e-learning is a responsibility of both faculty and students. Another important fact is that ZSEM has been using a common Learning Management System (LMS) in all courses. Since its establishment, ZSEM first used the WebCT learning management system, but in 2011 the School made the transition to Blackboard. Until today, ZSEM has developed 150 e-learning courses, and is the leading higher education institution in Croatia in the usage of e-learning in education. Eleven standards have been developed for annual measurement of the quality of individual elements of existing e-learning courses, ensuring continuous development of e-learning courses. In this paper we will analyze the use of various elements of e-learning systems such as online discussion, quizzes, surveys, assignments, different tools that LMS enables, user activity inside content areas in each course, and other facilities that can be used within the individual online courses at ZSEM. In particular, we will analyze the closed online discussions between professor-student and student-student. We will compare statistical indicators using particular elements of e-learning among the same generation of students at the beginning and at the end of their study period, as a means to portray the correlation between the individual elements of e-learning among same-generation students in the first semester Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) course and in the seventh semester Management Information System (MIS) course. The analysis has been performed in order to find the frequency of usage of certain elements within the e-learning system. Moreover, it will enable us to examine whether students who were motivated to use various elements of e-learning at the beginning of their studies are equally motivated to use the same elements at the end of their studies. We will also compare statistics using certain elements of courses at ZSEM in different LMS (WebCT and Blackboard), and we will analyze whether the activity of students was affected by the use of a specific LMS system.
