Identification of wind turbine mathematical model suitable for advanced controller design
The use of wind power has been increasing rapidly over the last few decades and according to all predictions this trend is likely to continue. At the same time, the need for better cost effectiveness of wind power plants has stimulated growth in wind turbines’ size and rated power. On the other hand, the growth of wind turbines’ size has also increased the structural flexibility and the loads wind turbines are exposed to. In order to design advanced controller that reduces structural loads and fatigue and that enables optimal energy conversion in a wide range of wind speeds, suitable wind turbine mathematical model is needed. Due to aerodynamic forces acting on wind turbine blades, standard wind turbine mathematical models are very complex and therefore not suitable for controller design. The scope of this paper is derivation of simplified wind turbine mathematical model which includes both aerodynamic effects and structural deformations and yet it is simple enough for controller design.
