Comparative analysis of Croatian and Mediterranean nautical tourism ports

Nautical tourism attracts attention all over the world and it is thought to be an important segment in tourism in general. As a form of special- interest tourism, it is very important for Croatia due to numerous benefits that it brings. The development of nautical tourism in Croatia started modestly in late 1960s and today it is a very important social category. Apart from generating numerous positive effects, in particular, socio- economic benefits, nautical tourism also gives rise to issues and concerns regarding safety navigation, and sea and coastal area protection, particularly during the building of nautical infrastructure. In this paper, the authors examine important features of nautical tourism, as well as the condition of nautical infrastructure in Croatia and Mediterranean countries. The level of nautical tourism development in the Mediterranean is analysed and compared with that of Croatia. Italy, Spain, France and Greece are Croatia’s main competitors. All have a greater number of sea berths and more area for accommodating vessels on land than Croatia, with the exception of Greece, which has fewer sea berths. Taking this fact into consideration, the authors explore the importance of the accommodation characteristics and natural features of Croatia and Greece, as fundamental competitive advantages in the future development of nautical tourism.
