Preparation and characterization of nanostructured sol-gel TiO2 coatings on stainless steel

Sol-gel coatings have been receiving much attention in the past few years due to low processing temperatures, high purity and homogeneity of deposited coatings. In this study, the deposition of TiO2 nanostructured, thin, ceramic coatings on steel grade X5 CrNi 18-10, by dip-coating technique is described. For the preparation of two sols titanium isopropoxide was used as a precursor, propanol as a solvent with addition of nitric acid as a catalyst and acetylacetone for peptization. Both of the prepared sols contained the same amount of mentioned components, the only difference was in the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to one of the sol. After preparation of sols, deposition of coatings by dip-coating technique was made, followed by drying and calcining at the temperature of 550 °C. Characterization was carried out by suitable analytical techniques: surface morphology was analyzed by atomic force microscope (AFM) ; thermal analysis (thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry) was carried out in order to determine weight losses during the heating from room temperature to 550 °C, as well as exothermic and endothermic reactions which occur in the mentioned temperature interval ; the crystal structure of calcined powder samples was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD).
