Non-native speakers lost in space but found in time
The aim of this study is to show that expressions concerning universal concepts present less of an obstacle for non-native speakers than those that are culturally specific. Using a targeted corpus of English expressions regarding time and space we will investigate the learners' comprehension of English expressions regarding time with similar figurative meanings in Croatian as opposed to expressions regarding space in which the meaning is arbitrary and cannot be predicted from the meaning of the individual words. The study includes a questionnaire which requires respondents to give a translation equivalent or a Croatian definition for the same idea or concept.
