Water loss analysis – Croatian practice
Different methods of analyzing of water supply systems with the basic purpose of water loss reduction have been used worldwide. Implementation of IWA methodology is the most commonly used and its basic principles have been successfully applied in Croatia. In this paper, water supply system of the city of Velika Gorica (Croatia) is analyzed, with the implementation of water loss analysis that authors consider appropriate in Croatian practice and which is derived from IWA methodology. The proposed methodology is based on the systematic analysis of the present state conditions of the analyzed water supply system. Detailed mathematical model was developed (using EPANET software) that takes into account all relevant characteristics of the system. Model calibration based on flow and pressure measurements at a number of characteristic locations is proven to be an extremely important segment of the overall analysis. Calibrated model is the basis for all further analyses and proposals of activities for improvement of the technical and operational conditions with special emphasis given to water loss reduction. In addition to proposal of system optimization, special attention is given to short-term priority activities related to pressure management.
