Net-to-Robot Distance-Keeping Strategies in Fish Farming
Robotics finds more and more applications in marine environment. It has become a low-cost, reliable and affordable platform that can be used in various underwater activities by both research communities as well as by industry. This paper discusses the use of underwater robotics for cleaning cage nets at fish farms. Fish farming suffers from bio-fouling which can hurt fish, increase mortality and consequently reduce production. It is important to clean the nets frequently in order to sustain the flow of oxygen- rich water through the cage. Typical robotic cleaning is based onhigh pressure water jet which require the robot to stay in contact with the net. The paper introduces the idea of replacing the high pressure with ultrasound and discusses the automatic distance-keeping strategies which are needed for such contactless ultrasonic cleaning.
