Preterm delivery and intrauterine growth retardation in relation to maternal smoking
The goal of this work was to examine the influence of smoking on the frequency of preterm deliveries and intrauterine growth retardation. In the period from 1987 to 1999, in the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics in Rijeka, all preterm deliveries (from 22 to 37 weeks of gestation) were examined except to multiple pregnancies and stillborns. The examined group consisted o IUGR infants whose birth weight was bellow 10th percentile. The control group consisted of all other preterm deliveries. In our study approx. a third of mothers were smokers. Preterm delivery was significantly more frequent in the group of mother smokers. no statistically significant differences between IUGR infants and the control group in the relation to the number of daily smoked cigarettes and birth weight were found.
