Effects of the seasonal fishing closure on the discards of the boat seine fisheries
Although discards represent a significant proportion of global marine catches, there is little information on its quantifying in the small-scale and artisanal fisheries. Therefore, the main purpose of this one-year study was to estimate retained and discarded catch composition of the commercial boat seine fisheries in the eastern Adriatic (north-central Mediterranean). Moreover, regarding the fact that boat seine is a seasonal fishing gear in the study area, we have evaluated the resulted differences between open and closed season and also the merit of the present closed season (from May 1st to September 30th). A total of 21 894 individuals, representing 77 fish and 6 cephalopod species, were recorded in the catches. All sampled cephalopods and 16 fish species were always retained, while 33 fish species were always discarded. The most abundant species in retained catches were Spicara smaris, Atherina hepsetus and Mullus barbatus, while Chromis chromis, Symphodus ocellatus and small specimens of Boops boops dominated discards. Apart from the retained and discarded species, the remaining 28 fish species were selected depending on their size (only larger specimens were retained). An estimated 50.8% in numbers and 38.3% in weight of the total catch were discarded. The mean abundance of retained catch per haul did not differ significantly between open and closed season regarding both number of individuals (P = 0.419 ; df = 19) or their weight (P = 0.174 ; df = 19). However, the mean discarded abundance per haul was significantly higher during closed season regarding both number of individuals (P = 0.001 ; df = 19) and weight (P = 0.002 ; df = 19). The multivariate analysis (ANOSIM) based on the number of individuals indicated significant differences in retained (P = 0.001) and discarded (P = 0.023) catch composition between open and closed season. As a conclusion, we believe that the present closed season is an appropriate fishing management measure considering that it forbids fishing in part of the year when large amounts of discards are produced.
