Discourse markers in EFL teacher talk: the case of okay
Discourse markers are ubiquitous in spoken discourse. Recent studies have shown the pervasiveness of discourse markers in teacher talk. This study investigates discourse markers in the discourse of Croatian teachers of English as a foreign language. Specially, it investigates the functions and positions of the discourse marker okay in different types of teacher utterances. The author will analyse the talk of eight teachers in sixteen recordings of EFL classroom talk in Croatian elementary schools (grades 5 to 7). The author starts from the following hypotheses: 1) okay is one of the most frequent discourse markers in EFL teacher talk ; 2) the discourse marker okay usually performs more than one function ; 3) the discourse marker okay is accompanied by one other discourse marker more often than other discourse markers. Quantitative analyses will be made to identify the occurrence of discourse markers in teacher talk and the distribution of the functions and positions of the discourse marker okay. Based on the results obtained, the implications of this study for the teaching practice and teacher education will be considered.
