Risk Management for Large Project : A Gate Model

This article presents the results of risk management research for application in improving the success in realization of large projects. The results of many years' research are presented in a cycle of six phases, which supplement and overlap each other. The research undertaken analysed the reasons for the success or failure of large projects. The presentation shows the results of exceeding the initially planned costs and time, using several data bases collected over the past fifteen years. A model is explained to create a risk breakdown structure whereby management focuses on the key risks. The basic components are defined of the key risks, used for analysis and management of projects, or in creating a risk register. In the final part of the presentation the idea is presented from the research supporting the idea of the use of a "double iron triangle approach" rather than the "iron triangle" known from the literature. In the description of the final phase of the research, which is still underway, a version of a "gate model" is presented for assessment and management of projects in the early stages (front-end). It integrates all earlier insights and results, in order to help increase the success of decision-making and project management. The basic idea consists of balancing the pushing and controlling forces of a project, that is, the use of a methodology whereby the project is moved from phase to phase, when its direction has been verified according to the goals set and the expected results.
