The Team-Based Face of Organizations
Teams and teamwork are extremely popular working practices. They represent a solution to the turbulent and challenging business environment. Organizations, in order to survive, need to be flexible and adaptive, so they encourage and motivate their employees to collaborate across organizational boundaries. People can communicate and coordinate among themselves using various team-based alternatives. In order to provide better understanding of the team-based face of organizations, the chapter notably describes a difference between groups and teams, thereafter providing a thorough classification of various team types. Furthermore, team size, task interdependence, team cohesiveness, team autonomy, team norms, skill diversity, team roles, and the nature of task are recognized as relevant team characteristics. They should be carefully designed if managers want to achieve advantages and benefits of the team-based face. Critical success factors such as team competition, team conflict and others are also recognized and analyzed, along with a team development process as a key mechanism for developing cohesion among team members and building a successful team. Finally, a team-based organization is described as an ultimate goal and design solution of the team-based face.
