Possible approaches to clinical ethics consultation services in Croatia
According to the literature a need for clinical ethics consultation services is present in the European countries in transition, like Croatia. However, in such societies the healthcare system has a bureaucratic climate and approach. This can be seen through many problems emerging in connection with many issues: better implementation of legal frameworks for patients’ rights, ethics committees’ establishment, and inequalities in healthcare provision. Development of clinical ethics consultation services is therefore presented with many challenges. In a society burden with lost of trust in medical practice, corruption, low educational levels of the patients, misunderstandings and manipulation with patients’ rights clinical ethics consultation can be easily transformed in a tool for alibi ethics or a tool for crisis management. In order to prevent such of sequence of events, here in this paper these challenges are being explored and possible approaches to implementation of clinical ethics consultation services in European transitional societies are being analyzed. Croatia has been taken as a model of this analysis.
