Sažetak
Nowadays, identification navigation systems such as AIS are primarily used for improving safety of navigation. In function of sustainable development and environmental protection, several studies so far have shown that AIS can be used for collecting and transmitting useful ship data that may be relevant for determining ship emissions. Emission monitoring of harmful gases in coastal and inshore areas is of great significance. However, emission monitoring outside the navigation area A1, i.e. open seas and oceans, should also be considered. Thus, a few modifications of AIS system for long-range transmission and data exchange by alternative satellite-communication protocol are proposed in this paper. In addition, architecture of the Ocean Environment Protection System that would provide data for Global Emission Registry is also suggested.
