Herbal teas : a focus on antioxidant properties
A herbal tea, or tisane, is an infusion made from any plant other than the leaves of the tea bush (Camellia sinensis). Historical documents indicate that the consumption of herbal teas dates back to ancient Egypt and ancient China, as far back as several thousand years B.C. Herbal teas have been incorporated in traditional medicines of many nations, including Chinese, Indian, Greek, Tibetan, Amazonian, African, European and South American cultures. The rise in popularity of herbal teas across the globe may be attributed to their diverse medicinal properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer and cardioprotective effects. The health benefits of herbal teas are largely due to the abundance of antioxidants in these preparations, including polyphenolic compounds, vitamins and carotenoids, which are capable of neutralizing the free radicals in the human body that facilitate the onset of numerous pathological conditions. This chapter focuses on research studies aimed at analyzing antioxidants and their activity in various herbal teas consumed across the world. An overview of herbal tea preparation and consumption trends is also presented
