Oxalato Complexes of Molybdenum(V) and Molybdenum(VI)

As part of our research on molybdenum complexes a series of oxalato molybdenum(VI) complexes with alkali metal cations has been prepared. Compound K2*MoO3(C2O4)**H2O (I), with a polymeric anion **MoO3(C2O4)*2-*n shown in Fig.1., was obtained from MoO3 and K2C2O4*H2O in water (pH = 6), whereas K2*Mo2O5(C2O4)2(H2O)2* (II), with a binuclear complex anion (Fig. 2.) was prepared by the reaction of MoO3, H2C2O4*2H2O and KCl (pH = 2). The analogous rubidium Rb2*Mo2O5(C2O4)2(H2O)2* (III) and caesium Cs2*Mo2O5(C2O4)2(H2O)2*(IV) salts, but not sodium, were also prepared under similar conditions. All compounds were characterized by chemical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, infrared and EPR spectra, and X-ray structure analysis. When exposed to the UV radiation the colourless transparent crystals of compounds (II), (III) and (IV) change their colour to green, with molybdenum reduced to the oxidation state +5.
