Inhibitors in oil and gas drilling, production and transport

The experience has shown that the use of corrosion inhibitors contributed essentially to the economic long-term operation of gas and oil wells. Particularly as an increased demand for energy resources has emphasised the need for the exploitation of more deeper and generally more hostile geological formations, representing an extremely corrosive system often as a result of simultaneous presence of mineralized water, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulphide with hydrocarbons. Corrosion failure can be intensified by elevated temperature and pressure, sulphur present either in the elementary state or as polysulphide, organic acids, oxygen introduced with injection water, microbiological activity at certain stages of production, and mineral acids that may have been used to treat strata of low permeability.Flow rate is also critical factor in corrosion process. Therefore the production is greatly dependent of material peformance and corrosion of equipment, notably of downhole tubular often limits the success of the all operation. In spite of a considerable volume of information in the technical literature, the problems how to deal with corrosion phenomena in oil and gas exploration and exploitation still pose tremendous challenges in the choice of materials and then in the control and monitoring of corrosion protection. The costs affected by corrosion damages and savings, gained through the use of inhibitors in oil and gas drilling and production, are enormous compared with those in many other industries. Advanced formulations of inhibitors studied and developed for commercial use in drilling and completion of wells in shallow geological formations, with good thermal stability under production conditions in deep sour wells have been discussed.
