Relationship between stream sediment geochemistry and drainage basin lithology in small order mountain drainage basins - factor model of the Medvednica Mountain, Croatia
A mathematical model is constructed to ascribe the geochemical record preserved in the stream sediment samplesdeposited in a number of catchment basins on the slopes of the Medvednica Mountain to a particular type of source lithology represented by igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. It is system-based model combining eight lithological and 25 geochemical variables (major and trace elements), reducing their complex relationship to six geologically meaningful factors. Five of these exhibit an unambiguous relationship between the stream sediment geochemistry and the bedrock lithology, and can be labeled as follows: factor of metamorphic rocks, factor of igneous rocks, factor of Tertiary carbonate rocks, factor of parametamorphic rocks, and factor of Mesozoic carbonate rocks. Two lithologies, the Mesozoic clastic sedimentary rocks and Quaternary sediments, cannot be clearly associated with any of the factors. Alternatively, on of the factors (F2) can be identified as "non-lithological" indicating other, perhaps anthropogenic, contributions to the stream sediment geocheimcal composition.
