Analysis of the railway transport and logistics support of the Port of Rijeka

Due to their complexity and importance, seaports are the most significant factors in the transport system. Modern seaports, along with their facilities, represent the complex logistic platforms. They are developing into the most relevant structure regulators and dynamics regulators in commodity flows on specific routes. Being the largest and the most important Croatian seaport, the port of Rijeka is of an enormous significance in the evolution of the international transport on the route from Rijeka to the gravitational hinterland. Logistic support and the impact of the rail transport on operating system and evolution of the port of Rijeka deserve to be paid special attention and attentively analyzed. Particular features of the rail transport such as: railway lines, rolling stock, operational technology and organization, Rijeka’s railway node and its affirmation and propagation towards the Istrian railway lines and terminals on the island of Krk, represent the basic features on which the rail transport logistic support to the Port of Rijeka is based on. Integrating the port area of the port of Rijeka in a single transport - technical - technological - organizational entity requires a powerful railway transport logistic support. Thus, the main aim of this study is to analyze the pre-existing conditions, define the development of Rijeka’s railway node and define railway connections to the gravitational hinterland.
