Riparian forests in the Croatian Podunavlje region cover over 20, 000 ha. Their growth, development dynamics and succession are directly connected with flood water and high levels of groundwater. The syndinamic development begins on sandy river islets and along the banks with pioneer forest associations made up of willows (most commonly Salix triandra and Salix purpurea), then continues with forests of white willows (Salix alba) which are later joined by poplars (Populus alba and Populus nigra), thus forming mixed willow-poplar, and then with pure poplar forests. The final stage in the development of the riparian forest vegetation ends with a forest of narrow-leaved ash and spreading elm (Fraxino-Ulmetum laevis), with frequent participation of pedunculate oak. The vegetational development comes as a direct consequence of the degree of parent substrate and soil genesis, combined with reduced levels and shorter periods of floods.
