A new black Tuber species from Croatia (Tuber decipiens)

Tuber decipiens is a black colored truffle and new species belonging to the order Pezizales and the family Tuberaceae. It was found in autumn and early winter along the northern Adriatic Sea (Croatia, Rovinj). It grows in a pure pine forest (Pinus halepensis Mill.) in calcareous soil (pH 7.7). Tuber decipiens (decipiens is "deceiving" in Latin) is significantly different in morphological characteristics from all other known black truffles ( Tuber brumale, T.melanosporum, T.indicum, T.aestivum, T.uncinatum, T.regianum, T.macrosporum, T.mesentericum and T.bellonae). It is the most similar to the winter truffle Tuber brumale Vittad., which grows in winter in symbiosis with decidious trees. In contrast to the winter truffle, Tuber decipiens has a constant basal depresion or one or more cavities, cleary evident in an appropriate section. The most significant morphological feature is the colour of its gleba, which is never black and in mature fruiting bodies remains a blackish gray colour, asci are rounded or very rarely ovate-eliptic, containing 1-6 spores with an odor that is not pleasant-reminiscent of soli or mould. Tuber mesentericum is similar too, but its gleba is beig to light hazel brown at full maturity, spores are yellow-brown and reticulate-alveolate, while Tuber decipiens has densely ornamented spores with single spines, well spaced an sharp. According to rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, new species will be described in the near future in a special journal using latin terminology. Etymology: from latin decipiens = deceiving.
