An Approach to Calibration of Ultrasonic Surgery Equipment
Ultrasonic surgery equipment has become a useful tool in general surgery as well in neurosurgery, even for complicated tumour operations. This equipment, also known as ultrasonic surgery aspirators or ultrasonic knives, is widely used in phaco emulsification, in treatment of cataracts, in recanalisation of coronary arteries, in removal of dental plaque and in litotripsy of calculi in bile ducts, parotid glands and kidneys. The surgical procedures based upon the use of ultrasonic equipment differ greatly from the classical ones. One of the differences is the necessity to calibrate ultrasonic equipment before introducing it into exploitation, to determine the amount of ultrasonic energy that will be fed to the patient`s tissues during the operation. The paper covers some aspects in calibration of ultrasonic surgery equipment.
