Requirements for Developing ICT Services for People with Complex Communication Needs
In this paper we discuss appropriateness of known requirements engineering techniques, inherited from software and systems engineering, for developing information and communication technology (ICT) services for people with complex needs. Considering specificity of target user groups and required service features, it is necessary to make a thorough analysis and define challenges and potentials of adequate requirements elicitation techniques that would properly incorporate multidisciplinary approach during development process. We propose new paradigm of so-called augmentative requirements engineering (ARE) that would allow holistic view on service requirements concerning users abilities and needs, service domain (communication, education, entertainment) and associated user supporters (rehabilitators, educators, family). Directions should strive towards fulfillment of universal design (UD) principles, most importantly: simple and intuitive ICT services providing perceptible information, being tolerant for errors, equitable and flexible for use, with the size and space for approaching and usage with a low physical effort.
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC); user-centered design (UCD); requirements gathering; symbol based communication services; e-accessibility
