Cellular response to surgical trauma
Experimental and clinical studies have shown that surgical trauma profoundly aff ects the immune system, including both the innate and adaptive immune responses. Major surgical trauma promotes immunological dysfunction that predisposes the patient to signifi cant morbidity. Current evidence indicates that the early systemic infl ammatory response syndrome observed aft er major surgery is characterized by proinfl ammatory cytokine release, microcirculatory disturbance, and cell-mediated immune dysfunction, followed by a compensatory anti-infl ammatory response syndrome, which predisposes the patient to opportunistic infection, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and death
