The physicochemical properties of a new zeolite, Type ″A″ are described. In their structure tetrahedrons of silicon and aluminum are connected in such a way that they form a space screen. Inside that screen there are cavities 11. 4 A in diameter, which are connected by canals 4. 2 A in diameter. In these cavities there are water molecules and exchangeable sodium ions. Removal of the crystal water results in a stable solid containing cavities connected by circular opening, amounting to 45% of the zeolite volume, thus producing high capacity of adsorption. Replacement of sodium ions by calcium ions effectively enlarges the pore openings so that straight chain hydrocarbons are readily adsorbed but branched chain hydrocarbons are excluded.
