Sphingoid bases in milk and dairy products
The concentration of sphingolipids in milk has been found to be sufficient to inhibit colon cancer cells. Although there is no evidence that dietary sphingolipids are essential for growth and development, the digestion products derived from them in the intestine (i.e. sphingosine and ceramide) have been shown to have a large impact on the developmental fate of many cell types. This is due to the fact that they act as intracellular messengers, being involved in cell cycle regulation and induction of apoptosis. The target of this investigation was to: 1) determine concentration of free and total sphinganine and sphingosine in the milk (human, cow's, sheep’ s, goat’ s) and dairy products, 2) identify if there are significant differences in concentrations of sphingoid bases between human milk and other kind of milk and dairy products. Sphingolipids were extracted from milk and dairy products. Free and total sphingoid bases were obtained by basic and acid hydrolysis, derivated with o-phtaldialdehyd reagent and analyzed using high performance liquid cromatography.
