INFO PSYCHOPHYS: BASIC programs for informational analysis of psychophysical judgments

A software package is described which allows the Apple II+, Apple IIe or Apple IIc microcomputer to produce a stimulus file, record data, i.e. absolute and comparative judgments of auditory stimuli, and analyse psychophysical judgments in terms of information theory. The package consists of three main programs written in Applesoft BASIC. PSYCHOPHYS EXP program was designed for running experiments on descrimination of the duration of auditory stimuli. This program permits variation in the duration of tones in stimulus range from 0.1 to 5.25 seconds. The user may specify the number of different stimuli. Each stimulus is presented in random order eight times in one experimental session. Subjects' estimates are recorded in stimulus * response matrices form. The program may be modified to provide an environment for acquiring data under different stimulus conditions and experimental paradigms. SUMPACK program performs summation of matrices for selected experimental session or for different sessions. Informational analysis of psychophysical judgments is performed by STATINF program which calculates the amount of transmitted information for a defined data set as well as the ambiguity of each stimulus and the equivocation of each response. The software package described here also consists of a few additional programs which make it possible for the user to perform informational analysis of the data for other stimulus properties or different sensory systems.
