English Language Studies: Realities and Challenges of the Bologna Reform in a Croatian University
This paper is based on a study which explores the challenges and outcomes of implementing the Bologna Process in a Croatian English Studies Department (University of Rijeka). After a brief review of the educational changes brought about by the Bologna Process, we explore: a) student perceptions about the English language programme relative to their expected learning outcomes and the current labour market, and b) teachers' views of the changes (in the curriculum, academic context, objectives and related factors) stemming from the implementation of the Bologna Process, their description of current classroom practice with regards to students and market place needs, as well as their own readiness / capability for meeting the demands of contemporary (Bologna) practice. In the conclusive part of the paper we discuss the implications of the two surveys for the future.
