Trends and tendencies in designing of furniture for disabled persons
These paper presents studies carried out on inhabitants of large cities allow concluding that 30-35% of their populations are persons with restricted mobility. There is very little data available concerning this extensive subject. In the result of performed anthropometric investigations of disabled persons carried out in the Institute of Industrial Design (IWP) data and recommendations were collected concerning internal design of flats intended for persons with impaired locomotive ability. The main principle adopted by IWP was the assumption that the space of such a flat should be designed in a way, which will allow movement of persons using wheelchairs. Disabled persons should be treated as equal partners in modern societies whose responsibility is to allow and ensure this group of citizens their rightful status conditions of normal functioning. Preparation of the living environment which takes into account limitations of disabled persons allows them to become involved in the life and work of the entire society and, in so doing, make them independent of other peoples assistance. The present study presents examples of requirements and adaptation of a typical apartment block flat for the needs of disabled persons with the disability of lower limbs moving about on a wheelchair.
