Design of children's cots with regard to child anthropometry

Children and their safety are paid much more attention at present day than was the case in the past. However, general, expert and scientific public is still not fully aware of the injuries occurring in a cot, and of the fact that injuries can be avoided if standards for children's cots are adopted.. In order to stress the safety of children, some of the injuries that may occur to a child in an incorrectly designed cot have been presented. Functional measures in Croatian and European standards for children's cots have been analysed, and anthropometric data for children up to 4 years used in the design and construction of cots and other children's furniture that prevent injuries are given. Parts of a child's body that are measured and measuring methods are presented in order to supply a full insight into the anthropometry of children. Great effort is taken in scientific, research, expert and consumer circles aimed at increasing the safety of children during their use of furniture and toys. Research has resulted in standards in the field of children's furniture, cots, folding beds, cribs and cradles. A considerable difference between the Croatian and European standards in terms of safety has been determined. Designers of children's cots are urged to adopt European standards in order to improve the construction-safety solutions.
