The aim of this paper is to show the main characteristics of Italian minority in Croatia (Comunita' Nazionale Italiana - CNI)with special regard to their historical background and demographics, language, scchools, cultural and scientific instructions and media. The Italian national community historically located in Istria, Kvarner, Dalmatia was upon the fall of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, divided intwo, as independent, soverign and internationally recognizd states, Slovenia and Croatia, were established. Today the presence od the CNI resembles a "leopard's spots" in Istria and Kvarener, in Dalmatia (especially in Split and Zadar), Slavonija (Ploštine) and Bosnia (Stivor). Language pluralism is characteristic of Istria and Kvarner. The members of the Italian minority speak four variants: Istrian-Venetian, localIstrian-Venetian dialect, regional Istrian- Venetian koine' and standard Italian. The most important Italian cultural and scientific institutions are the Italian drama group (within the National Theatre "Ivan pl. Zajc"), the Centre for Historical Research, the Information Centre for Career Counseling, the Italian Union. The CNI has its own press, radio and television programmes. The Publishing house EDIT operating in Rijeka publishes the Italian daily "La Voce", the biweekly "Panorama", the monthly magazine for children and youngsters "Arcolabeno", the quarterly cultural magazine "La Battana" and the yearly pedagogical journal "Scuola Nostra".
