Revised methods for measuring the quantity of unnecessary traffic flow conflicts in cities
With the aim of locating unnecessary intersecting and preventing its negative influence by reregulation of road network directions, this paper shows a method of analysis and quantification of unnecessary conflicts in traffic flows on at grade intersections and parts of the road network. Considering congestion and its implications that include economic costs, environment degradation and pollution there is a need for better organization and control of traffic flows in cities and especially in downtown areas which can thus be achieved with the reduction if unnecessary conflicts. Well designed directions of traffic flows taking into consideration minimizing of the unnecessary conflicting can improve network through output by as much as 40 percent, as was shown in our previous researches. The satellite navigation and the satellite-supported memorized vehicle trajectories provide extreme possibilities of studying the negative relations among traffic flows, unnecessary conflicts, unnecessary interweaving, merging and diverging. This paper overviews the utilisation on satellite based navigation in traffic flows conflict detection and quantification. In this paper we present revised methods, one main and two auxiliary for quantifying unnecessary conflicts that are helping to evaluate current state and advocate possible reorganization of traffic flows.
