Complex segregation analysis of blood pressure in pedigree sample from Middle Dalmatia

The data on systolic and diastolic blood pressure used in this study are a subset of the extensive material collected from the random (non-selected) sample of inhabitants of the Middle Dalmatia's islands of Brač, Hvar, Korčula and the Pelješac peninsula. The number of subjects included in this study (1126 examinees, 526 males and 600 females, aged 17 to 87) was determined by the coincidence that two (or more) participants of the original random sample are the members of the same family. The pedigree sample consist of 389 two and three-generation families having from 2 to 19 observed individuals. Complex segregation analysis of pedigree data has been performed by the implementation of the program package MAN (Mendelian ANalysis of pedigree data) developed by E. Ginsburg (1997). In the present analysis, by applying the usual transmission probability tests, the hypothesis has been accepted that a significant part of the variation of both the systolic and diastolic blood pressure is controlled by the putative large-effect gene. Additionally, the results are indicating the heterogeneity within sample in the genetic determination of the systolic blood pressure. Since environmental conditions as well as gene frequencies (and consecutively gene-gene and gene-environment interactions) are not uniformly shared in all human populations, some variations according to the particular gene pool and environmental conditions should also be expected.
