Problems of equal development of the coastal region – Šibenik-Knin County

The paper explores the area of Sibenik – Knin County, characterized by a rich landscape and biological diversity on land and sea. However, densely populated coastal area and islands, as well as the economic activities, contribute to the intensive use of resources. Development pressures, extreme urbanization and environmental pollution are especially noticeable in the town of Sibenik. Hinterland area is used extensively, which ultimately causes spatial imbalance and unequal development. The authors examine the causes of the degradation of traditional cultural landscapes and the decline of once arable and cultivated areas. They analyze problems that occur in rural areas due to incomplete mine clearance, and unplanned and illegal construction on the coast and islands. The authors advocate a holistic approach to planning and interior design while respecting the principles of sustainable development. The authors emphasize the importance of the revival of rural areas and islands as well as the preservation of their cultural and natural heritage. Their deterioration has to be stopped. The paper proposes measures to develop rural, eco and ethno-tourism, and regeneration of derelict and devastated rural communities.
