INTELLIGENT ROBOTIC SYSTEMS IN SURGERY

Modern medicine is one of the prime movers initiating the development of new technologies within which the application of robots is of quite new and special significance. The robotic systems in medicine, especially in surgery, is of an exceptional importance as it enables that most operations in surgery are carried out with smaller cuts, lesser trauma to a patient, a reduced risk of infection and a quick recovery. In this way patients are discharged from hospitals earlier and are ready to resume their daily activities in short time. At the same time robots can successfully compensate for ever-present need for several specialists that should assist in an operation. The robots in surgery can be used at two levels: either to perform auxiliary, assisting tasks, when a robot does not perform an operation but only the tasks related to an operation, or to perform an operation itself. At the 38th International Showroom of Innovations, New Technologies and Products "GENEVE 2010” in April 2010, the work “The Prototype of a Robotic System for Assistance in Surgery – “ROKI” Z20091863“ received 1) Golden Medallion and a Special Acknowledgement of the Jury, 2) Special Award of the National Agency for Scientific Researches of the Romanian Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sport.
