A GERMAN PERCEPTION OF MITTELEUROPA
There is only a limited number of phrases of topoi that have drawn that much attention in certain cycles of contemporary history as the term of Mitteleuropa. As in the second half of eighties, now again there is a widespread discussion about it which seems to be partly rather confusing. Emphasis should at first be put on the basic fact that Mitteleuropa is a term having been in use in and for the namely area for more than 200 years, including the regions between the Rhine and the Russian lowlands of the East, ranging in meridional dimension somewhere between Scandinavia to the rim of the Balkans. Other perceptions of Mitteleuropa e.g. Naumanns from 1915 or that of todays CEI (Central-European Initiative), have to be aknowledged as certain political concepts or geopolitical codes. By putting very different regions together in some of those codes, like the Baltic Republics, Balkan peninsula, Albania or Bulgaria, protending if they were kind of a historical or cultural unity, there might be growing confusion. Therefore founders and participants of those concepts should clearly define their code.
