Spirometric reference values for nonsmoking boys 9-16 years of age

The aim of this study was to develop suitable spirometric prediction values for asymptomatic Croatian nonsmoking boys. Spirometric measurements were performed in 2354 nonsmoking boys, 9 to 16 years of age in Croatia. Ventilatory capacity was measured by recording maximum expiratory flow-volume (MEFV) curves on which the forced vital capacity (FVC), one-second forced expiratory volume (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF) and the flow rates at 50% and the last 25% of the vital capacity (FEF50, FEF25) were read. The mean values of spirometric tests were presented graphically by age and height. Correlation coefficients of selected anthropometric parameters and age with spirometric tests were calculated. Equations for predicting ventilatory capacity test were calculated. Nomograms for the prediction of normal ventilatory capacity values were constructed according to age and height. The present spirometric prediction values are recommended for the use on the Croatian boys and on other European nonsmoking boys with similar characteristics.
