Effect on boronising on erosion corrosion of carbon and low alloy steels in NaCl/SiO2 water suspensions
An investigation was carried out in order to establish the effect of boronising in solid mixture on corrosion and erosion corosion of steels in sodium chloride solution, in a suspension of quartz sand in hydrocarbon condensate, and in suspension of quartz sand in sodium chlorate solution. Following suptrates were applied in normalised state: structural steel with 0,20 % C; structural steel with 0,45 % C; structural steel with 0,44 C low alloyed with Cr and Mo ; tool steel with 0,91 % C low alloyed with MN, V and Cr. The experiments were performed under turbulent flow conditions during 3 days. The wear of specimens by corrosion, erosion and erosion corrosion was followed by mass loss and microhardeness measurements as well by optical microscopy. The results have proven that the boroniosing retards significantly corrosion and erosion corrosion processes. Rather strong synergetics effect between corrosion and erosion have been established. The characteristics of the boronised layer depend considerably on the carbon content of steel. On the contrary, there is only a slight influence of low allloying of steel with Cr, Mn and V on the behaviour of boronised specimens.
