Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome as a possible cause of reduced immune response in pigs vaccinated against classical swine fever.
Classical swine fever (CSF) or hog cholera (HCV) is a contagious disease of domestic and wild pigs. The causative agent is a positive stranded RNA virus from the family Flaviviridae, genus Pestivirus. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a disease caused by a virus assigned to the genus Arterivirus of the family Togaviridae. Vaccination against CSF is regularly carried out in Croatia. A live modified China strain vaccine is in use. Monitoring of the effect of vaccination is also performed by serological testing. The influence of a PRRS virus infection when in combination with other infectious agents has been reported (Galina et al., 1994 ; Van Reeth et al., 1996). Even though this phenomena might be connected to systemic or local immunodepression caused by the PRRS virus, it has been reported that antibody titres against H1N1-influenzavirus or Aujeszky's disease virus after inoculation of the virus are not reduced (Van Reeth, 1997). However, on the basis of serological data obtained in two pig farms vaccinated against CSF, the difference in the serological response to CSF virus before and after an outbreak of PRRS was noticed.
