Dependence of Strength Values of Adhesive-Wood Bonds on Specimen Geometry
This work is a contribution to methodological analysis and improvement of shear-strength testing of adhesive wood bonds. Four types of specimens were compared in this study: two standard types of ISO 6238 specimen, standard EN 205 type, and a non-standard one, which was originally developed for compressive shear (CS) testing. The work aimed at selecting the testing method with the least influence of non-dominant factors on the testing result. Optical non-contact deformation measurement was applied to monitor the distribution of strain on the critical locations of the specimen surface. Four testing methods showed differences in the range and accuracy of obtained results. The EN 205 method showed surprisingly poor results in terms of high specimen deformations and scattering of values. The smaller ISO specimen and the originally developed CS specimen showed similarly reliable results. The work indicates optimization parameters for the size, shape, and structure of the specimen in order to obtain reliable adhesive bond strength values.
